About Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stones treatment is one of the most popular holistic therapies in Spas and Beauty salons.
Hot Stones are pre-heated in a stone heater. The therapist performes the massage with hot volcanic basalt stones of varying sizes, which are smooth and retain the heat. They place heated stones under and on top of the body, between the toes and in the hands. The direct heat from the stones relaxes the muscles and feels wonderfully comforting, giving off warmth deep into the tissue layers. It is said that one massage stroke applied with a hot stone is 10 times more intense and effective than it would be in a standard massage.
Clients can experience the feel-good factor as their body sinks into a state of deep, warming, comforting relaxation; melting away muscular tension, aches and worries. This relaxing, soothing will make them feel nurtured, pampered and special.
History of Hot Stones
Hot stones have been used in massage for over 4000 years. The Chinese have been treating themselves and others for thousands of years with hot stones to ease muscular pain. The Japanese put hot stones on their abdomens to aid digestion. In Roman baths, people had the choice to lay on tables with hot or cold stones. In America, native women placed a warm stone on their belly during their menstruation.
Until fairly recent times, hot stones were placed at the foot end of the bed to warm the feet. When hot stones are arranged along the chakras of the body, healing can take place.
Hot Stones treatment was also known in Hawaii, and made popular in the US by Mary Hannigan around 1993, who developed the LaStone Therapy.
